Well Water

Does your Well Water meet your expectations?

Well water comes with its own set of challenges. Unlike city water, well water is produced from the water source it’s tapped into. The source may contain several contaminants and impurities, many of which you may not be able to see or taste.

Common Well Water Problems

Unless you install a water treatment system, there is nothing between you and any water problems. Common well water contaminants and issues include:

Scale and Hard Water

Hard water is water that contains calcium and magnesium which causes the white, chalky scale buildup on fixtures and water-using appliances. It is unsightly and can reduce the life, appearance and efficiency of fixtures, water appliances and other items around your home. Hard water is very common with private wells.

Tastes and Odors

Unpleasant tastes and odors can make drinking your water difficult and can affect the smell and taste of things made with water, including ice. It can also make showering or bathing less than enjoyable. Hydrogen sulfide (sulfur smell), decayed vegetation and other naturally-occurring substances can make well water taste and smell bad.

Staining

Stains caused by problem water can ruin clothing, sinks, tubs, toilets, water-using appliances, even tableware. Reddish-orange, blue-green, pink or brown stains are difficult to remove and may require early replacement of items that are stained. If you notice red or orange staining, you likely have iron in your water. Blue-green staining can mean your water is slightly acidic or has a low pH, which can be damaging to your water pipes and eventually to your home.

Cloudy Water

Cloudy Water can be caused by dissolved solids, tannin, sand or other substances that affect your water's clarity. If your water is cloudy, it could simply be unappealing to look at, or it could clog or damage water-using appliances and fixtures over time.

Are you on City Water?

City water has its own problems to worry about.

Different Types of Water

Because the water in your water system will have different uses we need to identify where the water will be used so we can provide the best water available for the end goal.

Raw Water

Raw water is water found in the environment that hasn't been treated and does not have any minerals, ions, particles, bacteria or parasites removed yet.

Working Water

Working water is water that is used for washing, bathing and cleaning. It makes up 99% of the water we use in our homes. Even thought your water is supplied by the city or a municipality, it is probably hard water that contains chlorine or chloramine. Hardness can cause problems with your appliances, fixtures and surfaces. City working water is often treated with a prefilter, water softener and dechlorination or chloramine removal system.

Drinking Water

The water you use for drinking and cooking makes up only about 1% of the water in your home, its quality is the most important to you. To ensure your water is safe for human consumption, water supplies are treated with disinfectants at the water treatment facility. They make sure the water meets the EPA's guidelines. For safety reasons, the disinfectant must remain in the water while it travels to your home, but is no longer needed or wanted when it arrives.

Recommended Well Water Treatment Package

With a private well, your water comes directly out of the ground. The groundwater is naturally filtered through the earth’s surface as it runs into your well, but it also picks up minerals and contaminants along the way. As your water runs through the ground, it can potentially interact with dangerous contaminants like pesticides and fertilizers. The same minerals found in city water can be found in well water, causing you to have the same issues with hard water. Even if your well water doesn’t taste or smell bad, it can still be negatively affecting your plumbing and appliances with mineral buildup.

Over the past 63 years of experience in Washington State, we recommend the following systems to treat your raw well water.

  • Doesn't my city test the water?

Municipal water treatment facilities provide safe water but government standards and our own aren't necessarily the same.

The water coming from city faucets still contains contaminants that are legally considered safe to drink but you may not actually want to.

Pharmaceuticals and other chemicals that find their way into the water supply have led consumers to seek out Rainwater.

  • How can I find out what is in my water?

Rainwater offers FREE consultations where one of our experienced water experts will analyze your water for you.

  • Will a Kinetico non-electric system work during a power outage?

Thanks to kinetic energy, yes, it will! Kinetico's non-electric water systems gain their power from moving water, thus eliminating the need for electricity.

However, if you have well water, your well pump and pressure tank still need electricity to supply the water.

  • How do Kinetico systems know when to regenerate if there is no timer?

Kinetico softeners are based on demand, so they measure the amount of water you use, not the time between regeneration cycles. This allows them to be more efficient than the competition. Therefore, if you're out of town, the system won't run and if you have guests, it will run more often to meet demand.

  • What is Kinetico's equipment warranty?

Kinetico equipment is backed by the best manufacturer's warranty in their industry. We will happily provide you with details of the warranty during your FREE consultation.
